How does Guru Guy Computer Collection, Recycling and Disposal Services work?

Introduction

Guru Guy will receive or if necessary collect your unneeded items from your premises. This will be done at mutual convenience and the items shall be identified and listed on the collection form.

The collection form is signed to confirm that you were the legitimate owner of the items and that you have the authority to pass those items over to the Guru Guy team for re-use, recycling or disposal as we see fit.

Why is it free?

Our services are free because our time and costs are paid for by the sale of workable items that enthusiasts or smaller businesses can utilise. Of course, not all items are resellable in this day and age, and in those circumstances Guru Guy either donates to charity, recycle or strips the parts down to basic components for re-use elsewhere.

What happens to my data?

Guru Guy takes Security and Privacy very seriously and applies the following practises to all data-stored components to safeguard your IP, Security and Customer records/personal files:

  • Magnetic Hard Disk Media is wiped using the British HMG (Her Magesty's Government) IS5 Enhanced 3-pass Secure file and cluster erasure technique, U.S DoD 5220-22.M or greater. These techniques can be achieved yourself before collection, by using Windows-based utilities such as Heidi Eraser or Bootable Erasers such as Darik's Boot And Nuke.
  • Memory Cards, Flash Devices and other re-writable media are destroyed using the techniques above or similarly acknowledged secure removal algorithm's such as Eraser Portable Utility.
  • BIOS Passwords are wiped and removed. Settings are re-set to factory defaults.
  • Router, Switches and Internet Security Appliances are re-flashed using the latest firmware with factory defaults restored.
  • Operating System software and any other software (unless the retail boxes/licenses are provided) is removed as part of the steps above to the data medium.

Of course, as with all good safe-keeping, Guru Guy recommends that your data is removed and securely formatted using the utilities above before you arrange collection for your own regulatory compliance or safeguards. Guru Guy, at this stage, cannot be held responsible for your data. Whilst we follow all procedures above on all data storage devices, we cannot gaurantee how long the units remain in storage until they are securely wiped. It is for this reason that we provide this service as a 'best practise' with the best intentions to preserve your privacy and security. But the only true way to be sure is to erase your data yourself.
