Server
2008 Hyper-V
Client (Guest OS's) Deployment & Troubleshooting
So, you install Server
2008 and the Hyper-V role, but things are not going so smoothly....
right?
Guru Guy is here to help with common errors, problems and workarounds
to get you IT Administrators up and running in no time!
Hyper-V
Guest shows in Device Manager the "VM BUS" Device with exclaimation
marks (Ie. Device error, not installed, could not be started).
For VMBus and other components necessary for synthetic device support
in Hyper-V to load correctly, the HAL running in the virtual machine
must be an APIC HAL.
The easiest way to change this setting is
through the “msconfig.exe” tool on your Windows
Vista / Server 2008 Hyper-V Guest. If you select the
boot tab and then hit advanced, you’ll notice a checkbox
marked “Detect HAL”. After selecting this
checkbox and hitting OK, you must reboot the
virtual machine.
If the problem still persists, or is already set to ACPI x86,
it is
because the Hyper-V Patch has not been installed in the guest operating
system (Windows Vista/Server 2008), KB949219.

Problem is, to Install this Patch into the Virtual Machine with no
Networking abilities (so no Internet connection)! Solution:
Save the file as an ISO
and MOUNT it in the Virtual Machine Guest as a CD-ROM Drive. (This is
done in the Hyper-V Manager). For those who don't know how to make an
ISO file out of the MSU Patch, Guru Guy has made an x86 ISO download
as a pre-packaged CDROM
image ready to mount!
Manage Hyper-V
from a remote computer (Windows Vista SP1):
Hyper
V is now
available as an MMC Snap-in which will, once installed, appear in your
Vista start menu and will enable remote management and configuration of
Hyper-V on your Server Core 2008 or full Server 2008 installation.
The only pre-requisite is that if it is a Vista client you are using,
you need to have Service Pack 1 installed.
Download the Microsoft MMC Snap-in for Hyper-V management here:
