Stay
on Top of Your Email
Nowadays,
having a few hundred emails in your inbox awaiting action is not
uncommon, but
its how we deal with it that makes a difference…
…Here
are
a few tips on how
to stay on top of your
email:
-
Treat
your inbox as your “To-do” tray on your desk. Only
tasks
awaiting action should stay here. When they’ve been
completed, move them into a folder whether it’s into a
project folder, supplier folder or customer folder –
here’s where your own organisation comes in!
-
Treat
email as a series of requests for your time and attention. When
an email arrives, make a
decision what to do with it.(See
next 3 steps…)
-
If
there is nothing to do with it and it’s not valuable, delete
it immediately.
-
If it
needs a response, make a quick response there and then. Don’t
let emails build up otherwise
you won’t want to deal with them. The added stress of having
all those emails unsorted and not actioned is a distraction not needed
in the workplace.
-
If an
email requires pending action, mark
the email for follow-up or put
it (them) in a to-do list. Don’t let yourself forget it!
You
are eventually
going to delete emails anyway; so the
question is when
you are going to do
it. More importantly, don’t let it cloud your mind
– take the appropriate action!
