NT 4 Workstation & Server
Released in July 1996,
Windows NT 4 operating system
brought increased ease of use and simplified management, higher network
throughput, and tools for developing and managing intranets. Windows NT
Workstation 4.0 included the popular Windows
95 user interface yet
provided improved networking support for easier and more secure access
to the Internet and corporate intranets.
Windows NT 4.0 was the successor to Windows NT 3.1 and later 3.5 & 3.51.
In October 1998,
Microsoft announced that Windows NT would no longer carry the initials

Microsoft
Windows NT 4 Terminal Server Edition
Windows
NT 4.0 Terminal Server, released in 1998, allows the users to log on
remotely. The same functionality was called Terminal Services in
Windows 2000 and later server releases, and also powers the Remote
Desktop feature that first appeared in Windows XP.
Terminal Server is a
multiuser server core that provides the ability to host multiple,
simultaneous client sessions on Windows NT Server 4.0 and on future
versions of Windows NT Server. Terminal Server is capable of directly
hosting compatible multiuser client desktops running on a variety of
Windows-based and non–Windows-based hardware. Standard
Windows-based applications do not need modification to run on the
Terminal Server, and all standard Windows NT–based management
infrastructure and technologies can be used to manage the client
desktops. In this way, corporations can take advantage of the rich
choice of applications and tools offered by todays Windows
environment.
System requirements:
- 32-bit x86
microprocessor (such as Intel Pentium or higher) or Alpha.
- VGA or
higher-resolution monitor.
- One or more hard
disks, with 128 MB minimum of free hard disk space on the partition
that will contain the Terminal Server system files.
- For x86-based
computers, a high-density 3.5-inch disk drive plus a CD-ROM drive.
- 32 MB of RAM, plus
4-8 MB for each typical user who is connecting.
- Transmission Control
Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
